Scene 4: Kicks

Painting of 90s aesthetic black children looking in a show box

This vivid piece uses elements typography and cinematography with my typical oil portrait style with an emphasis on jewelry and the vibrant plethora of colors visible on the faces of the subjects.

The piece is meant to look like a scene from a movie that doesn't exist, which is why the borders mimic the aspect ratio of a motion picture. The piece is meant to evoke the themes of coming-of-age and becoming.

The Story

This piece was create with the intention of challenging myself  by creating a "still from a movie that doesn't exist". This meant I had to use the visual elements of film like setting, character design, and storytelling to create this painting.

The scene I created was meant to be reminiscent of 1990s coming-of-age stories made for black youth with the clothing and aesthetics of the time.

The themes of the piece focus on those coming-of-age aspects and ties to the overall theme of growth and identity.
